The end justifies the means (to the eyes of the people)?

Peter has made a pertinent question to which Jaclaz invoked a very popular sentence on his reply.

According to Answers.com we'd find a quick definition saying: "A good outcome excuses any wrongs committed to attain it." but how far does this apply to our reality?

The actual discussion came around because off a few small sized files that were created and included by Microsoft on their Windows 2003 Install (which is free to download as a 600Mb trial).

It is an old question that was brought many times before in the past to which we surely know the answer and respect due author copyrights, but the argument reasoning between all people involved is simply outstanding!
