"International Point" section renamed

The section where non-native english speakers can talk in their own language was renamed to "Write in your own Language" and moved from the WinBuilder area to the "Community" area.

Hopefully this change will make this section more visible and members will find it more suitable for discussing general topics not directly related to winbuilder.

Newsletter - 30th March 2008

This a quick summary of the recent talks and news from the boot land community.

Forum improvements

The forum has been improved with a new version of the forum software that solved some of the annoyances reported by members and increased the overall security and performance. We also took this opportunity to use a brand new skin theme to give an extra taste of personality. In overall you should notice a faster forum, but there are still some details needed to be corrected and fixed to ensure good work conditions.
The current discussion and feedback of what should be changed or improved on the forum is here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=4277

One important detail: Please update your boot land links with this one: http://boot-land.net/forums

New sections: "Getting started", "Linux and other OS flavours"

We have two brand new sections!
As mentioned on the last newsletter, there was a voting to decide wether or not create a more visible section to help out everyone that is just making their first steps on the boot land and also a section dedicated to technology focused on Linux and any other alternative OS worth referencing.
Don't forget to visit them:

Running Linux apps semi-natively under Windows?

Jaclaz found a very good project called "andLinux" based on coLinux that aims to run Linux programs inside the Windows platform.
This is a very good solution for running many of the popular linux specific apps alongside with your work OS, more details here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4283

DOS bootdisk with NTFS and USB 2.0 support

Who would ever think that this would be possible?
DOS is not known for fast transfer rates when moving gigabytes of data from one media to another but using a driver for copying files using this 2.0 support will surely change this perspective.
Jezza333 is the person that is making some experiments on this area and has sucessfully made a bootdisk with these characterists, look on his topic page for good instructions to build one yourself: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=4260

Windows XP running on a OLPC (100 USD computer)

Dietmar is doing some experiments with the famous OLPC (One Laptop Per Children) machine and has already suceeded in getting ubuntu running under these conditions. Now it's time to try booting XP but this has proven to be a challenging task. If you have curiosity to check his progress or have any more ideas regarding the methods to boot Windows using Grub, do visit this topic here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4294

New winbuilder project: PE2

A new project using the winbuilder engine has been created, it's called "PE2" and is based on Windows AIK 1.0 - the result is a slim and efficient boot disk capable of being used as a web server, rescue OS or being used in many other tasks. For those who don't know, the Windows AIK is a freely available package from MS that can be downloaded from their site at absolutely no cost.
Allanf also gives more details and screenshots about his new project here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4133

Running KDE4 on Windows?

You may have heard by now that KDE4 is running on Windows machines, these are really good news for everyone who likes this desktop environment, but how do you install it?
To answer these doubts - a small tutorial with instructions to teach you what it's needed to know can be found here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4207

These are the news for the moment, hope you enjoyed this message and don't forget to drop by a visit to keep in contact with the rest of the community.

Hope you have a good week! :)

Forum software upgrade

As it was noted, our forum is being upgraded to a more recent version of the software.

This is also a good opportunity to do a severe improvement on the performance of our server so an additional array of heavy modifications will also be added and tested.

Since most of these new addons are very recent and somewhat complex to incorporate, it might take a bit longer to get things running good and smooth.

This blog post will be used as reference to the current status of the improvement works in case the forum gets inoperational.

New moderators

New moderators were added to the recently created sections "Linux" and "Getting started".

ispy will be responsible for organizing and improving the readability of the "Getting started" section and Mikorist will be moderating the "Linux" section.

Both members have a good amount of experience handling the questions and topics that are meant to be discussed on each area and we are bound to see many interesting new topics to read and learn.

Congratulations to ispy and mikorist, best of luck with this demanding task.

KDE4 running in windows

Last night I read a post from TheHive mentioning the "stable" release of the Safari web browser for the Win32 platform.

One of the advocated vantages (besides the self-proclamed feature of being way faster than any other popular web browser) is the fact that it recycles some of the code used on konqueror - one of the most popular web browsers that is used for some years under KDE.

Well, instead of trying out Safari - I remembered that some time ago KDE4 was promissed to debut support for the Windows platform and therefore Konqueror should be implied on this package.

So I went along to find out how their work as going.

For others interested in following their footsteps, the start page is this one: http://windows.kde.org

It's not mentioned on the main page, but there is a Installer tool that will get all the files for you.

This tool can be downloaded and found here: http://download.cegit.de/kde-windows/installer

------------

After downloading and compiling your fresh KDE4 apps be prepared to stay amazed.

I've finally saw for the first time a konqueror window running on top of a XP machine without requiring any sort of emulation or such.

Don't expect a high level of functionality as these releases have just recently moved away from alpha state and they still have a lot of bugs needed to solve and other features required to be implemented until it can be used in a stable manner.

Nevertheless, the promisse of bringing freedom of choice to our desktop is getting closer as the quality of these developments get better and better.

You find a quick start tutorial based on my (short) experience with this new concept: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/Running-KDE4-programs-under-Windows-t4207.html

---

Ended my experiments running konqueror to open a webpage (http://google.com) and it took nearly a minute to open this simple page using a fast ADSL connection.

Long time waiting, which only proves the need for more developers and beta testers to get their hands on this project and help it move forward!!

Linux section

The time seems fitting as the we approach the discussion of new techniques that also embrace the knowledge and software written in for open source platforms such as Linux.

To allow further discussions and also to begin learning more about this interesting world, a new section specially dedicated to Linux has been created.

At the moment it will also host discussion and presentations for other alternative OS's with smaller implementation but nevertheless so interesting to try out and see how they work.

If you have a favorite OS that is not based on MS don't forget to mention it there..

New "Getting started" section

We've been discussing the need for a new section where "newbies" would easily find tutorials and quick guides to help them learn how to use some of software discussed on boot land.

As a result, a new section called "Getting Started" was made available and can be used as the central point to include the currently existent tutorials and also add a space where people can discuss what else is relevant to be included.

There was some controversy regarding the term "newbie" as it is thought that more experienced developers also use this resource as a learning point to master new and more advanced level informations.

Many thanks to ispy, amalux and other members who made such a valuable effort into the creation of this section.

We now have a priviledged spot to focus all pertinent informations and a very good resource learn, teach and share knowledge, best of luck to those who take the initiative of posting guides and also a warm "thank you" in advance for taking the time to teach us.

WinBuilder Browser

Richard (arvy) has just released an excellent tool written in php to manage wb web servers. This is a very good way to keep any web server updated without need to upload all files from scratch or need to do any manual editing of the updates.ini file to reflect changes on the download center.

This php script is quite standalone and requires no dependencies. You should need to edit the respective configuration files and you've got this script working in less than 5 minutes.

There is still a lot of room for expansion so it would be a good idea to give back some feedback on Richard so that anything left to be done can be implemented or corrected.

Very good news for everyone involved in updating these web servers! :)

You can check his awesome work on this page: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=4129

Free hosting and winbuilder.net subdomain

On boot land we keep the tradition of providing free hosting to people who need a safe place to store their work rather than using any temporary hosts like rapidshare and such.

Essential conditions to get hosting:
  • You publish your work on boot land or any other related discussion forum

All provided web spaces contain these features:
  • Very generous quota of disk size according to your needs (>100Mb)
  • mySQL database will be added if needed
  • support to web pages along with php 5
  • FTP account to upload files
  • No restrictions to direct links for file downloads
  • No bandwidth restrictions
  • You can choose a subdomain between "boot-land.net" and "winbuilder.net", for example "hello.winbuilder.net"
  • No pesky google ads or anything else are ever placed on your web pages

In return, there are also some rules of polite behavior:
  • Don't upload and share software considered as warez
  • Use good sense when sharing files to avoid slurping all the machine resources for yourself and leave other users (including the boot land forum) with a poor service experience.
  • Whenever possible, add a simple web page to help visitors know what to find in your space.
  • Add a link to your web space in your forum signature so that others can visit your site.

---

If you respect these conditions and you're interested in this offer but you don't know how to start publishing your works because you've never created your own website then I'll also write a short "starter's kit" to help you getting a page done quickly.

  1. Uploading files - once an account is given to you it should be possible to login into your ftp account to upload files but how do you do this action? You can simply open up Windows Explorer and type "ftp://hello.winbuilder.net" (where hello.winbuilder.net is your given ftp account name) and fill in the login and password details when windows asks for them. You can also use FileZilla - it's free and will resume your file upload operation if it gets broken for some reason.
  2. Web Page Creation - It's not difficult to get started, you just need some tools that help you making this task a bit more simple. For this task I recommend starting out with kompozer because it is really simple to use and completely free. You can later move on to other more advanced tools as get more experience with this matter.
  3. Good resources - You might also be interested in knowing how many people visit your page and for knowing these statistics I recommend using statcounter because their service is free and very good. HTML pages to use as templates with a decent quality can also be found on this link: http://www.2createawebsite.com/build/templates.html

We sincerely hope that this hosting offer can help people who just need to have a space where their work can be made available and shared to others without need for any costs.

Users who already have a .boot-land.net subdomain can also request a new .winbuilder.net for hosting pages related to WinBuilder projects/developers.

To request or modify your hosting account, do publish a message on the boot-land forums at this location: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4113

The end justifies the means (to the eyes of the people)?

Peter has made a pertinent question to which Jaclaz invoked a very popular sentence on his reply.

According to Answers.com we'd find a quick definition saying: "A good outcome excuses any wrongs committed to attain it." but how far does this apply to our reality?

The actual discussion came around because off a few small sized files that were created and included by Microsoft on their Windows 2003 Install (which is free to download as a 600Mb trial).

It is an old question that was brought many times before in the past to which we surely know the answer and respect due author copyrights, but the argument reasoning between all people involved is simply outstanding!

Turbo Boot on XP PE

Medieval has again restarted a very rich discussion regarding the methods to speed up a the boot time of a XP PE boot disk.

This time a new approach is taken upon the Hardware detection methods which seem to be possible to be reduced and optimized - resulting in a much faster boot.

At the moment the discussion has been involving some of the "older" members which are quite familiar with the inner works of these projects and are without doubt capable of achieving these proposed goals.

Best of luck to all of them and also for everyone interested in joining this discussion so that we can in fact see something new from this joint effort.
