28th of April - newsletter from the land of boot disks

One important detail about Boot Land is that we take good pride on the community effort to learn and share knowledge freely across the web and everyone is welcome to visit to and place any questions wether they are "advanced" or "newbie" - they're both important to us.

But what happens if have very tough question about boot disks?

Place it on the community forums and we'll see how it can be done or not. There's also the probability that someone else already asked the same type of questions in the past and some of the answers that your're looking for we're already provided.

One quick tip for finding past discussions with google:

On the search box of Google type "site:boot-land.net" followed by the search term that you want to find.

For example, if you want to find a given script to add java support to your VistaPE you can use the search text "site:boot-land.net Java vistape" which will return the following result:
http://www.google.pt/search?num=100&q=site%3Aboot-land.net+Java+vistape

In conclusion..

This has been a very week rich in discussions about boot disks and boot loaders, there are many different options available across the web but few are either completely freeware or properly documented with user friendly documentation to understand how they work. If you would like to learn how any given multibooting method works just visit the forums and place all those questions that you might have. Nobody knows everything but the learning process is usually fun.

Thank you again for reading our flipside newsletter from the land of boot disks,
hope you have a great week!

New multiboot forum

The grub4dos section was moved to the Project Forge sub-forum and a new section called MultiBoot was added on the boot methods sub-forum.

Hopefully this will direct more people to grub4dos specific questions and also open up a new space dedicated to discuss more specifically about other boot loaders.

Some of the multiboot discussion topics that were placed on the generic boot methods sub-forum were moved to this newly created section.

April newsletter!

Over these last days, there has been a sort of nostalgic mood in the air about older OS's and a few members have started some new projects to bring back the fun of tweaking with these operative systems.

These are OS's that fewer people remember or even tried before the XP era, some of them represent a few of the most important steps in the evolution of desktop computers up to our days.

NT/OS2

A long time ago, Microsoft and IBM decided to work together and produce the best operative system ever seen up to that date - OS/2. Some time later, both companies parted from this goal but Wendy is resoluted to bring the NT/OS2 dream back to life. Check her work here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4290

pico95
, relive Windows 95 as a recovery system

Asiekierka, is sparking up the interest in Windows 95 and has proposed himself to create a project that would build a minimal Windows 95 Operative System. This project is on the initial steps and he needs help from other people interested in seeing this possible.
You can visit his project presentation here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4353

nanoNT

Still following the same line of testings, Asiekierka also started a project intended to produce the smallest possible Windows NT 4 boot disk ever seen (10Mb at the moment), so far this project is also taking the first baby steps as pico95 but you're also welcome to join his effort on this link: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=4351

WinBuilder Database System
, Searchable project management, tracking, cataloging, downloading method for scripts

Arvy has been working intensively on a web based plaform that allows to unify all available winbuilder download servers and use really cool features like searching for scripts scattered across multiple locations. Visit the his quick guide page to learn more about this tool: http://virtech.org/tools/wb_manual.html
Project topic discussion here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4279

Download Management
, Beta Release

Also related to the way how scripts can be downloaded from winbuilder servers, we find a solution from Peter (PSC) to allow downloading across several wb servers straight from your computer, his main concern were app scripts and common tools shared between projects, it is also worth a look.

Quick guide is here: http://nativeex.boot-land.net/Programs/downloadEx/downloadEx.htm
Project discussion on this link: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4270

Exporting Builds and Fast Building of PE boot disks

Alexei has wrote a tool that allows to reproduce PE build from MS source using only batch and .reg files.
It will work by decompiling and interpreting the steps done by a winbuilder project to later reproduce exactly with an extreme gain of overall speed.
This process is fully automated, you can find the presentation of Alexei here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4244

Installing Ubuntu on a portable USB drive

There was an interesting discussion regarding the methods to run your Ubuntu OS straight from the USB drive, look on the link to learn how this can be done: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4266

MOA 2.3 is available

Sanbarrow has released a new version of his project called MOA, which enables a PE boot disk to run a vmware emulator.

The project announcement is here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4298

TimeZone change under VistaPE

Squfa ran into a few issues because his VistaPE disk was changing the timezone whenever he used it. This issue came because the WinPE boot disks was no taking into consideration his time zone so he adapted a bartPE plugin to work under VistaPE, look here for the solution: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4346 (was written in old script format but can quickly be updated if requested)

ninja pendisk

Nuno has created a small tool to keep pendisks safe from running those autorun.inf files that try to infect your computer with viruses.
Read about this ninja here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4350

Winbuilder [074] "Lets Get Familiar with Log Files & Debug Files for Error Reporting"

Ispy has written a good story that will teach how to save the log files that are outputed when a winbuilder project is created, this is a good page to read for everyone interested in posting their log.html files on the forums when some error is found after running a project. This story can be read here: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4355

In conclusion..

There are so many interesting topics that are discussed every week that passes but unfortunately most of these great ideas and tools slowly fade away of memory because they pass unnoticed. It's sad because sometimes only a few people understand the value of the discussed concept and the author eventually ends up demotivated to keep working on it.

Fortunately, there is a solution for this problem.

Visit the presentation pages of the projects that you like best and write your opinion. This is without doubt the most important way to encourage other members to continue and boost the development of your favourite research projects.

We take pride on a community that is composed by members interested in learning and sharing knowledge, your help is vital to keep this community spirit alive.

Thank you for reading this newsletter,
hope you have a great week!

Visitor record number

The recent March newsletter has brought back a lot of members who registered some time ago and I admit that it felt nice to view their interest in reading up the stories that happen inside boot-land.

Due to this newsletter we've reached a new visitor record to a number around 280 boot land members visiting the site at the same day, which was also followed with an approximate number of >10.000 page views and 3.770 unique visitors (guests and registered members).

This community has proven it's value and is now showing how time has changed a few things but nevertheless I think that our goals remain very identical and the interest in testing new boot methods is still an uncharted territory where new techniques are waiting to be published and improved.

The boot land people have good reasons to be proud, seriously doubt many other forums out there are so committed to efficiency in providing good and free solutions as the ones we have available today.

Thank you for keeping this dream and effort so alive and well.
