That's, really... of my dreams. happy22.gif

I usually format my UFD with more than 1 partition with XP Disk Management Console.
The firts reason is due to the fact that I almost always run Full XP from the 2nd partition of my UFD, then encrypting (with TrueCrypt) my system drive.
And to the fact... that is on top of my signature.
The second reason is due to either so many reports and my (little) experience pointing to its (MMC) greater booting compatibility (please read: bootability).
Furthermore I can freely and handly choose the most appropriate size of my partitions depending on different needs.
Afterwards also I reserve the 1st partition to a lot of img, ima, dsk and iso loading them through grub4dos.

So, since my personal preferences are as far manual/freedom-oriented as possible, I actually still prefer to format my UFD under XP (contemporarely using a Filter Driver) with MMC (Microsoft Management Console) and with at least 2 partitions.

Also, I like to use - as far as possible - the Windows default parameters for file-systems, partition maximum size, clusters size, and so on.

Well, after reading an interesting reply of wimb here, I thought about this topic that could possibly collect/share application's requests and/or pointings for (further) tool's deployment and a kind of summa of patches, ideas and findings, interesting news and related issues.

About the patches that I can remember there are (at least) the following

About the developers/tools that I can remember (excluding at least for the moment Bean123 and fuwi) as in my opinion possibly oriented to this specific stuff there obviously are (strictly in alphabetical order)

Currently, the UFD Formatting Tool of my dreams is which that allows me - after formatting my UFD with MMC - to patch its MBR and its BootSector with the best known "compatible" patches and the most effective ones achieved with the great help of all of us.
And possibly in one single, simple and strictly-dedicated tool.
Does this interest somehow any directly interested guys/developers too?
Hoping in the affirmative...

Many thanks to all of you! cheers.gif

Hello Folks!

Stumbled upon this post over at the Bart Forum:

http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16315

They've had their share of this problem as well . . .

However, it looks a though there may be some ideas in here to address the severe issues uncovered in my previous post, "The 8 Colors of LiveXP".

Maybe a patch which would detect the presence of the offending Intel chipset(s) should be incorporated into each build produced with the WinBuilder environment? Perhaps, then, a flag could be passed (in some way) to the retooled version of bearwindows' driver (when he finally gets it fixed) to make the necessary video adjustments at boot???

Just something off the top of my head. Dunno whether or not any of this is really useful ohmy.gif

Thoughts anyone???

Hi guys,

so i tryed to make an Script for Vistumbler.

first i failed because this App is scanning Network Adapters over the WMI Win32_Networkadapter Class.

so wmi is not completely integrated into Vistape 12 RC1.

so today i was able to:

- Integrate WMI
- fixing the winmgmt Service
- integrate WMI Classes

on my side the service is not starting automaticly. it's only starting up if i will do a: winmgmt /sharedhost + winmgmt /salagerepository.

so after that i was able to use fully the Wmic + wmictest wink.gif biggrin.gif

all my virtual Hardware was recognized.

so WMI queries are working now also for Vistumbler. App is starting.

i will check tomorrow the script on my laptop with Wireless Connection wink.gif

If is working well, i will upload to my Page

until there here a Screenshot wink.gif

I got everything I needed to be in LiveXP except common tasks pane.

Eventhough I choose "Show common tasks in folders" in folder options and visual effects tab in system properties, nothing happens. I have a older LiveXP iso with SP2 which i got it from my friend. In that liveXP, the common tasks pane is working.

I tried using "explorer shell - tweaks and settings script" and shellWM script. They didn't seem to work. Please assist me in bringing the common tasks pane in explorer

P.S: I am using the LiveXP-Recommended.zip as my source for the project.

Well, I have been surfing around and look for way to make a multiboot and multi-install external HDD for use of repairing/backuping PC and laptops.

1. Is there any way to make a multi windows installations external HDD which I can boot from and choose what version of Windows I want to install? That is, can I prepare an external HDD with partitions for windows 98, xp, vista, 7 installations and somehow create a boot.ini file so that I can choose what version I would like to install?

2. Through some of the tutorials, I have been successfully installed and run my windows xp on my external HDD. Is there any way I can combine this with the one described in (1). That is I want an external HDD with one windows xp partition while at the same time contains multiple windows installations (on different partitions) so that I can choose which one to install or boot to xp.

Is it possible?

Thanks for your help. biggrin.gif

Some days ago, IceCube mentioned the fact that it was difficult to find some specific informations that did not appeared neither in forum search or google search.

Unfortunately, very active forums tend to push older topics out of the public view and we sometimes have troubles in either remembering or being able to hand pick a few of those that worth to keep at hand.

A small step for solving this problem was taken.

Boot Land has now available it's own directory service.

http://boot-land.net/dir

It's a very simple system that requires no registration.

I've added some default sections and if more sections are necessary - please let me know.

I will be trying to update this directory with relevant information that is both posted here at the forums or anywhere else on the Internet and would really appreciate the help from other members in the community to keep this service up to date.

Thank you and hope this makes simpler to organize the interesting topics that are worth reading.

The GUI of VirtualBox does not have an option to boot a USB drive (Physical Drive) in a virtual machine.

However you can attach a physical drive to a virtual machine using a command line tool that is bundled with Virtual Box.You can then boot your virtual machine from the attached Physical drive.

You can check the complete tutorial with screenshots here.

There is a problem with .iso file association in UltraISO and win7pe. This is cause by the program isoburn.exe according to NirSoft's FileTypeMan program located in the windows\system32 folder.

I have tried commenting out the lines that copy isoburn.exe in the ExeFiles.script; this does not resolve the issue.

Any solution to this issue?

I can edit the file association with NirSoft's FileTypeMan for .iso to use UltraISO.exe. Everything associates correctly and the context menu works for .iso files.

Hi, I'm trying to boot into both Hiren's BootCD 9.9 and a Vista OEM install iso and having some similar issues. I'm using a usb hard drive and syslinux to load up grub4dos. I'm using the (hd32) parameter. With hiren's I've tried both loading it into ram first and not loading into ram. Same deal.

Basically they will boot into the OS part and there it looks like the iso gets unmounted as they can't find the files they need to work. Like in hiren's the XP mini OS will boot, but I can't access any of the tools. With the vista install, it will boot to the graphical part where I select the language and keyboard layout, then it can't find files.

Also, I've tried to find some decent documentation for grub4dos but I'm turning up empty. The g4d wiki is extremely lacking. I'm mainly trying to find out what all the different menu.lst commands and switches mean.

I'd much rather boot into iso's directly as it's much easier to maintain a large collection of iso's on my external hd as opposed to having a lot of them (30+) in extracted form and trying to update them when new versions come out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Asterisk (PBX)

Asterisk is a software implementation of a telephone private branch exchange (PBX) originally created in 1999 by Mark Spencer of Digium. Like any PBX, it allows attached telephones to make calls to one another, and to connect to other telephone services including the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. Its name comes from the asterisk symbol, "*".

Asterisk is released under a dual license model, using the GNU General Public License (GPL) as a free software license and a proprietary software license to permit licensees to distribute proprietary, unpublished system components.

Due to free licensing of the software, hundreds of community programmers have contributed features and functionality and have reported and corrected bugs. Originally designed for Linux, Asterisk now also runs on a variety of different operating systems including NetBSD, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris. A port to Microsoft Windows is known as AsteriskWin32.

Features

The basic Asterisk software includes many features available in proprietary PBX systems: voice mail, conference calling, interactive voice response (phone menus), and automatic call distribution. Users can create new functionality by writing dial plan scripts in several of Asterisk's own extensions languages, by adding custom loadable modules written in C, or by implementing Asterisk Gateway Interface (AGI) programs using any programming language capable of communicating via the standard streams system (stdin and stdout) or by network TCP sockets.

To attach traditional analogue telephones to an Asterisk installation, or to connect to PSTN trunk lines, the server must be fitted with special hardware. Digium and a number of other firms sell PCI cards to attach telephones, telephone lines, T1 and E1 lines, and other analog and digital phone services to a server.

Perhaps of more interest to many deployers today, Asterisk also supports a wide range of Voice over IP protocols, including SIP, MGCP and H.323. Asterisk can interoperate with most SIP telephones, acting both as registrar and as a gateway between IP phones and the PSTN. Asterisk developers have also designed a new protocol, Inter-Asterisk eXchange (IAX2), for efficient trunking of calls among Asterisk PBXes, and to VoIP service providers who support it. Some telephones support the IAX2 protocol directly (see Comparison of VoIP software for examples).

By supporting a mix of traditional and VoIP telephony services, Asterisk allows deployers to build new telephone systems, or gradually migrate existing systems to new technologies. Some sites are using Asterisk servers to replace proprietary PBXes; others to provide additional features (such as voice mail or voice response menus) or to reduce costs by carrying long-distance calls over the Internet (toll bypass).

VoIP telephone companies have begun to support Asterisk; many now offer IAX2 or SIP trunking direct to an Asterisk box as an alternative to providing the customer with an ATA.

Configuration

To configure Asterisk into an operational system, the administrator must:

* create channels/devices that allow Asterisk to communicate through a voice path that uses that channel and/or devices. These can be VoIP, or TDM, or analogue telephony devices.
* compose a dial plan, written in the Asterisk control language, to express the algorithm or control flow Asterisk uses to respond to users through their devices. Asterisk can be used for many specific applications and a customized dial plan has to be created specifically for each purpose, such as the functionality of a PBX.

Asterisk is controlled by editing a set of configuration files. One of these, extensions.conf, controls the operational flow of Asterisk. A native scripting language is used to define the elements of process control, namely named variables, procedural macros, contexts, extensions, and actions. A context defines a logical group of extensions (destinations) which can have multiple sequential execution or action steps (priorities) associated. Extensions can be the source or destination of a telephony communications channel, it is a programming step at which a device starts its sequence of operations (dial plan). Through the confines of contexts, the dial plan restricts and permits which extensions and facilities a device may access. Extensions consist of possibly multiple steps of execution, each performing either logical operations, directing program flow, or executing one of the many included applications available in Asterisk.

Applications are loadable modules that perform specialized operations, such as dial a telephone number or another internal extension (app_dial), perform conferencing services (app_meetme), or handle the operations of voice mail (app_voicemail). The plethora of applications available provide a unique capability and tool set to formulate algorithms that can perform a large array of different, customized telephony scenarios. Applications control the Asterisk core functions through a set of internal operation primitives, that are organized in an extensible fashion through a modular architecture and application programming interfaces (APIs).

Programming an Asterisk system can also be accomplished via separate, external applications using the Asterisk Gateway Interface. The Asterisk Gateway Interface (AGI) is a software interface and communications protocol for inter-process communication with Asterisk. In this, external, user-written programs, are launched from the Asterisk dial plan via pipes to control telephony operations on its associated control and voice channels. It is similar to the CGI feature of web servers in that any language can be used to write the external program which communicates with Asterisk via the standard streams, stdin and stdout.

There are several GUI interfaces for Asterisk. These interfaces allow administrators to view, edit, and change most aspects of Asterisk via a web interface. As of version 1.4, a GUI labeled "asterisk-gui" is being developed alongside Asterisk. This specific GUI is being maintained by Digium. There are other GUIs, such as FreePBX. Other attempts to simplify Asterisk installation have been made, trixbox (formerly Asterisk at home (A@H)) is a popular distribution of Asterisk that includes Asterisk and FreePBX. There is also a free downloadable version - PBX in a Flash (PIAF).

I am trying to install (say 5) different versions of Windows XP from an USB hard disk (onto the hard disk of 5 different pc's). The USB hard disk has been partitioned into 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition with 2 logical drives. I prepared my Windows XP setups with "USB Multiboot 10".

The USB hard disk boots and shows (very fast and thus hard to read) Grub4dos output, but finishes with the Grub4dos command prompt (in stead of the intended menu). The problem is my menu.lst file. Anyone who can help me out with a (start of a) properly working menu.lst file?

[I had a look at the sample menu.lst, different topics, and at the command reference (http://diddy.boot-land.net/grub4dos/files/commands.htm), but am not able to get menu.lst correct.]

Next to my weekly dose of annoyance about WB not being able to do what it should, WB not doing things the way it should, WB finding differences where there are non and the fact that the syntax changes from section to section, i was very pleased to learn today that ConvAscii.exe, works only on *.inf files and even worst only on a folder i386\inf! mega_shok.gif

Who in their right mind comes up with stuff like that? crazy.gif

Hello, boot-land community!

I try to boot MacOS X from Linux on Apple Intel Mac. But currently with no results.

I try to use kexec + grub4dos + boot-132. Boot-132 iso was converted to some bootable hd image. Then i use the following command:

# kexec -l grub.exe --initrd=boot-132.img --command-line="--config-file=map (rd) (hd0); map --hook; chainloader (hd0)+1; rootnoverify (hd0)"
# kexec -e

When boot-132 started, my keyboard stop working. And i can't type any commands (press enter for example to continue booting). In the net i find biosdev=xx option for boot-132. With this option i can specify device for booting. I try to change biosdev option in various ways, but started from kexec boot-132 don't see any internal drives, only the virtual image (--initrd=boot-132.img).

May be grub.exe follow to incorrect boot-132 work? Can i boot boot-132 from kexec without using of grub.exe?

Anybody have any experience in booting MacOS X from Linux through kexec?

P.S. Sorry for my english.

I have tried

CODE

Which doesn't seem have any effect

Many thanks

Hi All,

Thanks for all the hard work many of you have done here and even more so the kindness in sharing your work!

Ive been learning alot here while lurking arround the last year or so but there is SO Much info Im overwhelmed.

often I cant seem to find the main objectives to so many techniques posted so I cant figure out if they are useful. if every post had the main objectives listed in them I dont think I would be so overwhelemed.. in other words whats it for?

hence the main reason I registered to post. please help me eliminate the confusion. I have a few questions to start with.
what is the best way to image vista and XP OSs? is there a standard format that works in more than one program?

I would like to be able to boot from my USB HDD then copy my exsisting OS then save it, then modify it, save that, modify more, save again, etc. so to have multiple configurations to choose from at boot.

then I'd like to be able to use "my" configurations on any compute

hope I havnt asked too much and thanks again!

LP

Grub4dos - UBCD4WIN on Grub4Dos

I have been trying for almost a week to get UBCD4Win to work on a multiboot USB. I have tried booting the .iso (and I get a BSOD when starting the pen drive's XP OS).

I have also tried putting the individual files and folders onto a third partition on the USB. Unfortunately, I cannot place these on the first partitions of the USB drive. If I try the following the following menu entry, the computer simply reboots.

CODE
root (hd0,3)
chainloader /ntldr

I am sure this is because the ntldr is not on partition (hd0,0).

Does anyone know of a way to boot to UBCD4Win if it isn't on partition (hd0,0)? Or a way to boot the iso?

I have googled and googled all over the place... here, cd411, 911cd, nobody seems to have a clear cut answer that I can make work.

Thank you guys.

Hernando

Hi,

I have noticed that all newer Lenovo laptops (x61, x200s, T60, T61, W500) that I have tried have failed to load floppy based images (anything that uses memdisk to load up the files). They will attempt to load the image and then lock up. Latest bios, latest ubcd, updated syslinux files, etc.

I have a feeling that a memdisk just needing a minor adjustment as there just seems to be a blanket failure on the lenovo machines and memdisk. Perhaps a memory addressing issue?

Regardless I would like to help to tackle this problem. How could we go about pinpointing this problem?

thanks,
dpc

The Syslinux Project covers lightweight bootloaders for MS-DOS FAT filesystems (SYSLINUX), network booting (PXELINUX), bootable "El Torito" CD-ROMs (ISOLINUX), and Linux ext2/ext3 filesystems (EXTLINUX). The project also includes MEMDISK, a tool to boot legacy operating systems (such as DOS) from nontraditional media; it is usually used in conjunction with PXELINUX and ISOLINUX.

Presentation by H. Peter Anvin at FOSDEM about the Syslinux Project:
QUOTE

General information about the configuration file of the Syslinux Project bootloaders (SYSLINUX, ISOLINUX, EXTLINUX and PXELINUX) can be found at:
http://syslinux.zytor.com/wiki/index.php/S...NCLUDE_filename

Also check the docs in the Syslinux archive that you can download from: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/syslinux/
The /doc directory contains the last (and most detailed) info.

The Syslinux Project contains also 2 COM32 modules that can produce a nice menu:
  • menu.c32
  • vesamenu.c32

Look at: http://syslinux.zytor.com/wiki/index.php/Comboot/menu.c32 for more info.

The Syslinux Project has also a lot of other COM32 modules (are programs that run directly on a SYSLINUX bootloader derivative).
You can find those COM32 modules in the /com32 directory of the downloaded Syslinux archive.
  • /com32/menu/
    • menu.c32
    • vesamenu.c32
  • /com32/modules
    • chain.c32 (booting bootsectors, booting hard drives, booting ntldr, setupldr.bin, bootmgr, grldr)
    • reboot.c32
    • ...
  • /com32/hdt

For more information about all COM32 modules, look at the the begining of the sourcefile (*.c) in the same folder as the *.c32 module.
e.g.:
For more info about chain.c32 look at /com32/modules/chain.c:

ISOLinux
Pros:
- Pretty! supports PNG and JPG backgrounds and a nice popup password box
- Menu syntax is easy to understand
- Granular password protection...you can password protect one menu and leave the others with full access
- Haven't met anything DOS/WinPE/Linux that I couldn't boot with it yet
- Can boot zipped floppy images (zip or gzip)
- Hotlinks for menu options
- Under active development
- Documentation is excellent
- Has a plethora of included modules (.c32)
- Can boot ISOs with MEMDISK: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8258

Cons:
- Some people have issues getting some specific floppy images working
- Can't boot OpenSolaris (at least I haven't gotten it to work yet...something to do with RockRidge extensions i'm sure)
- Only can access files on the partition from which it is booted.

GRUB4DOS
Pros:
- Can have a background image
- Granular password protection (I think?)
- Can boot some ISOs
- Can boot zipped floppy images (gzip)
- Floppy images that people couldn't get working with memdisk work
- You can do some other cool stuff from the GRUB command line
- Can access files on all partitions that it can understand

Cons:
- The background image is in a weird format and limited to 16 colors
- Password prompt is not as pretty as ISOLinux
- It only supports gzipped floppy images (no zip support)
- Can't have blank lines in menus
- No menu hotlinks
- Syntax can be daunting at first
- Documentation is ok, can be hard to find some stuff (Like how to boot an ISO!)
- Customization factor is low unless you like to hex edit
- Lead developer said he's taking a break from development but others will be taking over

Hi there

I'm currently trying to make a boot CD with Aerostudio. The most thing works without a problem, but with some .iso's I got some.

I read the most threads from Shirin Zaban to figure out the problem I have, without success.

Here the problem:

I try to boot Erd Commander with following commands:

(I created the Erd Commander Image from a CD)

Erd Commander

bcdw (cd)/pathtoiso/file.iso
error: CDBOOT: Couldn't find NTLDR

Created via bbie.exe a erdcommander.bin
run (cd)/pathtoiso/file.iso
error: no error, just nothing happens when I click the button
if I take a filename that doesn't exists, I receive a error (To test maybe run has a problem)

[removed]

Everything testet as .iso via VMWare Workstation/Aero QEMU

Other .iso starts without a problem as ex: Acronis True Image etc, some BIOS updates (not all)

Does anybody have a hint or something?

Thanks

Patrick

as i mentioned before, there is a new step for me to try the graphic multi-boot. This is a toolset, i think:

- your_lua_scripts to be used to control your menu system.
- aerosim.exe to simulate the 'your_lua_scripts' on windows, just for designing, deving, debuging your scripts;
- aero.sys+aeroboot.mod to run 'your_lua_scripts' at grub run-time.

how about the AeroStudio's aeromgr.exe ? it is just a tool on this new framework. Let me explain for that. by using lua scripts, we can do many things, not only contol the whole system, but also user friendly, i think. yes, we can use this new script framework to render the traditional menu files generated by aeromgr.exe.

on aerosim.exe stage, it used SDL to be the lower layer; on aero.sys stage, it used VESA to be the lower layer. the bridge is your lua scripts. If you used luaplayer on PSP, you should know what i'm talking about.

this time, i'll prepare some docs to help you to use it, what had missed in aerostudio english edition. and here is a new site to achieve this purpose.

http://bbs.znpc.net/aeroboot/

later, i'll release a package for this 'Aeroboot'.

Hi There,

Greets to all of you, PE community, and specially those in charge of this site, an absolute success.

PENetCfg:
I updated PE Network Configurator to v2.33 to add support for WinPE 3 (Windows 7-based PE).
Actually it was already working but I updated it to fix the bug of complaining about missing factory.exe and the like if it tries to start network support.

ERDLogon:
I updated ERDLogon to v1.2 to add support for MSDaRT 6.0 (Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset or ERD Commander Tools 6.0) as MSDaRT 6.0 changed the method of setting Target OS Root.
Also, with ERDLogon v1.2 you can launch MSDartTools.exe or individual tools without having to launch RecEnv.exe (Recovery Environment Tool) that forces a reboot or shutdown afterwhich.
Also, you'll be able to set Target OS Root to paths of WinXP/2K3 and make most of MSDaRT 6.0 tools work on older systems.

PS: you can download the tools from my page http://www.geocities.com/pierremounir/
(No problem of uploading them on any free Web hosting service to avoid download limit on Yahoo, for interested people of course)

Best regards,
Pierre Mounir (TheTruth)

Starting from today forward, boot-land.net has now a forum section specially dedicated to Syslinux

Syslinux is a versatile boot loader that allows running several modules right from the boot menu.

You can visit the new forum section here:
http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showforum=92

IceCube has volunteered to be our resident expert on the matter and he has a lot of good ammount of knowledge and experience to share with the rest of our community about this specific boot loader.

While we speak, some promissing new features seem headed towards Syslinux and windows based boot disks in a near future.

Let the fun begin.

I'm wondering how it could be possible to unload a Windows NT/2k/XP completely from RAM in order to allow an other OS (let's say DOS with GRUB4DOS again :-)....?

I' quite convinced that there must be a way to realise such a NT-*UN*-loader-/WinNT-based-OS-loader!

As far as I know a kernel mode .SYS-Driver has unlimited access to the physical memory....

Please think about it at least twice ;-) ...

Three question regarding Win7PE

I tried a Win7PE project and successfully build a Win7PE image. However, I have some question regarding it.

1. I cannot use 7-zip to open the boot.wim file to see which files are included in the image like before VistaPE. How can I see those files and folder structure?

2. I'm very interested in how the network part in Win7PE was built. I tried myself using WAIK3.0 to build an image but always cannot get IP address. I already used the steps in WAIK3.0 to added all the packages (like winpe-hta.cab, winpe-pppoe.cab ) and network drivers.(Dism /image:<path_to_image> /Add-Driver /Driver:c:\winpe_x86\mount\Windows\driver.inf) and all displayed success. However, when using the ISO to boot a computer. It cannot access the network like the ISO I using Win7PE. I found there's a program in Win7PE called PEnetCFG, I guess if this program did the task to prepare for the network? I will be very appreciated if anyone could guide me to using WIAK3.0 to create an ISO with network ready. (Maybe some program like PEnetCFG or some registry needed, I'm not sure)

3. I would like to know if there's a IE script in Win7PE available so that I can build a PE ISO having IE browser like previous in VistaPE.

Anyone has any suggestion regarding the above topic is really appreciated. Thanks very much.

Jim

Hello,

I remember reading an article about patching FAT32 boot sector (by setting 3 or 4 NOPs to the boot sector code) in order to fix MS boot sector code. In U_SET_XP program the wording is "CHS knockout".

I desperately searched using Google/BootLand but could find again this article :-(.
What I need is to know the old binary values to be patched, and the new values (NOPs).

Thank you.

Hi,

there's an option "Forward msg to pipe Tftpd32Syslog", but I can't see an option to send the tftp.log entries to a pipe. Is there an (hidden) option?

I'm trying to integrate Tftpd32 into a firmware update tool and need to discover which files have been delivered to the device. A pipe would be the best solution, I think.

MaineCoon actualized the old syntax help file to support WinBuilder version 076, partly 077 beta.

The new help is available now at the known place http://winbuilder.net/help/scripts/script_syntax.html

Many thanks Walter! 1st.gif

In the future we'll try to hold the syntax description actual and do not let it become so stone-aged again.

If there are any remarks, concerns etc. please post here.

Please post also if some phrases could be translated from German-English to English wink.gif

NaughtyPE - NaughtyPE Logo

I've tryed to create a Logo for NaughtyPE, but i'm completely untalented when it comes to stuff like that. frusty.gif
Anyone having a hand for things like that?

My initial idea can be seen here.
[attachment=8767:NaughtyP...ogo_Blue.jpg]
White background with a thin black border to give it the impression of a seal.
The PE in a NaughtyPE like blue and the actual name in black.

Readability was poor imo, so i exchannged the blue for a brighter color.
[attachment=8768:NaughtyPE_Logo_Red.jpg]

Readability was improved, but still not good. Besides i didn't like the red. So my next idea was this.
[attachment=8769:NaughtyP...lue_Dark.jpg]
The name sticks out great now, but the PE melts too much into the background. thumbdown.gif

So red again! realmad.gif
[attachment=8770:NaughtyP...Red_Dark.jpg]

So now i have a logo which is easily readable, but sucks design wise imo.

Any help would be appreciated.

When booting up to the usb it skips the grubfordos loader and goes right into vistape. If I boot up into a virtual machine or burn a cd then the grubfordos menu appears and I can choose from the list. Is this normal behavior for grubfordos?

Hi,

Latest fbinst can be downloaded from gna:

http://download.gna.org/grubutil/

The tricky thing about flash boot disk is compatibility. There are three modes, HDD, ZIP and FDD, and different bios uses different disk parameter. Some bios support lba mode to access flash disk, some don't. Some of them even skips a certain number of sectors at the beginning of disk. It's difficult to create a flash disk that would work in all these circumstance.

This is what fbinst is for. I've come up with a special disk layout that works arond the various compatibility issue. Here are the steps to create an universal flash boot disk in Windows XP:

1. Insert the usb drive
fbinst would scratch the drive later, make sure to backup useful files.

2. List disk devices in system

Enter the following command in command prompt:

fbinst --list

The result may look something like this:
(hd0): 488392065 (233g)
(hd1): 3919860 (2g)

In this example, (hd1) is the flash disk

3. Format the usb drive

fbinst (hd1) format --force

WARNING: this step would destroy existing data in usb drive.

This would create the necessary disk layout, and add a single fat data partition. Remember to replace (hd1) with the actual device detected in step 2.

You can use the following options with format command:

--force
Without the --force option, fbinst only initializes the structure in mbr, leaving the data partition intact. However, this requires that the data partition is located at sector 0x3f00. Recommend to use --force once to create the necessary layout, then use format without --force when reinitialize is required.

--fat16
Format data partition as FAT16

--fat32
Format data partition as FAT32

--base NUM

Set base sector. In 1.2, the default value (63) works nicely, tt's not recommended to use other value.

--align
Optimize data storage in fat partition.

--size NUM
Set the size of fat partition, for example:

fbinst --size 500m (hd1) format

Without --size option, it uses all availble space in the flash disk.

--zip

Format flash as USB-ZIP. Please note that this option merely set some field in mbr to influence bios, however, different bios uses different algorithm to determine ZIP/HDD mode, so there is no guarantee which mode is detected by a certain bios.

I believe ZIP mode is more generic than HDD. Some bios can't boot from flash disk created with HDD mode. However, ZIP disk would be (fd0) at boot time, and the data partition is (fd0,0), some application can't handle this properly. To solve this, you can use grub4dos's map command to map (fd0) to (hd0).

Some bios use the MSWIN4.1 and FAT16 signature in the first data partition to determine ZIP mode. By reformatting the data partition as NTFS, you can change these two signatures and therefore trick the bios into using HDD mode.

4. Load grldr into mbr

fbinst (hd1) load c:/grldr

This commands store grldr to mbr, which would be loaded automatically on startup.

You can also use ntldr instead of grldr.

5. Other commands

You can use fbinst -h to display command usage.

* fbinst 1.3 update:

Support multiple boot entries and embedding data files in the 8m reserve area, you can also specify the size of reserve area.

To edit boot menu, use the following commands:

text TEXT
Add text item, it can be used to print header or footer information in the boot menu.

menu TEXT CSIP [KEY]
Add menu item, CSIP is the entry point. KEY is the hotkey, default value is the number key 1-9 for the first nine menu items. TEXT can be empty string "", which defines a hidden item. It's not showed in screen, but you can still boot in with the right hotkey.

load FILE ADDR
Add load item, load the content of FILE in memory address ADDR.The boot item must follow a menu item, and there can be more than one of them.

file FILE NAME
Add file item. It's used to add embedded file to the reserved area. The files can be access in grub4dos via the (ud) device.

clear
Clear all items.

For example, here is a steps to create a boot menu:
fbinst (hd1) text "Please select menu"
fbinst (hd1) menu "F1. grub4dos" 2000:0 F1
fbinst (hd1) load c:/grldr 0x20000
fbinst (hd1) menu "F2. grub2" 2000:0 F2
fbinst (hd1) load c:/g2ldr 0x20000
fbinst (hd1) text "---------"
fbinst (hd1) menu "F3. ntldr" 2000:0 F3
fbinst (hd1) load c:/ntldr 0x20000
fbinst (hd1) menu "" 2000:0 F4
fbinst (hd1) load c:/grldr_old 0x20000
fbinst (hd1) file c:/aa.img aa.img
fbinst (hd1) file c:/bb.img bb.img

There are two options that can be configured using config command:

default
The default menu item. The index starts with 0.

timeout
Timeout. If timeout is 0, it doesn't show the menu and boot default item directly. However, even with timeout=0, you can still force the menu to show by pressing ESC key at startup.

Here is the config samples:
fbinst (hd1) config --default 0
fbinst (hd1) config --timeout 5

fbinst 1.3 also allows you to customize the size of reserved area. The minimum size is 0x3f00, but you can set it higher. For example:

fbinst (hd1) format --reserve 10m --force

Without --force, format would try to create the necessary disk layout without scratching the partition table. But it requires that there is at least 0x3f00 sectors (about 8m) before the first partition. If reserved space is not enough, it just print an error message and quit. In this case, you don't need to use --reserve, as it would allocate all space before the first partition to reserve area by default.

And now there are two area for embedded data, one is sector 0-0x3f00, another is 0x3f00 to the end of reserved area. By default, it will fill the first area, when it's full, the file pointer is moved to the second area automatically, but you can also make the file pointer jump to second area with this:

fbinst (hd1) config --extended-data

One advantage of the second area is that it uses direct copy without inserting additional information, so you can use "map" instead of "map --mem" in grub4dos.

* grub4dos update
This version of grub4dos understands fb structure, it get disk geometry from fb instead of detect it again.

It also support virtual device (ud), which can be used to access the files embedded in reserved area using the file command in fbinst.

* grub4dos update
now support direct map on files in the extended area, find command can find files in (ud) device.

* fbinst 1.3 final
New command "restore", used to restore fb mbr scratched accidentally.

fbinst (hd1) restore

New command "export"
Export files

fbinst (hd1) export "aa.img" c:/aa.img

Download:
http://download.gna.org/grubutil/

Corresponding grub4dos:

Unpack is a usefull command but it's not easy to use or understand all possibility
Code genered is sometime too long
Inside the funtion too much if and begin

So it's time to give it a new look, but ofcourse compatible with actual command
I just think about this today
A syntax like StrFormat, which give a lot of possibility with a short code and better understandable

What could be the Syntax ?
Unpack,Filename,Option, parameters ==> is easy to make compatible with actual
or Unpack,Option, parameters ==> here option should begin by a specific char (/ )

What could be Option name ?
/All ==> ExtractAllFiles
/All if ==> ExtractAllFilesIfNotExist,
/One ==> ExtractFile
/Archive ==> ExtractFile + unzip + delete archive
/SFX ==> ExtractFile + run +delete
/Run ==> ExtractAndRun
/Zip ==> ShellExecute,Hide,#$q%Tools%\7z.exe#$q,"x -y #$qFilename#$q -o#$qTarget#$q"
and what else ?

Any sugestions are welcome

Thanks

Hi Gang,

I am fairly a newbie, trying to graduate rolleyes.gif ... and I am stuck. I am creating a USB boot device which among other things, should simply boot the WinXP hard drive in the computer. I know all about XP needing to be the (hd0) drive on the computer and how to boot to it using something like this:

CODE
title Boot XP
map (hd1) (hd0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map --hook
root (hd0,0)
chainloader /ntldr
boot

In the example above, XP is in (hd1) and it boots quite nicely.

My problem lies in that I cannot always determine which (hd#) is XP's hard drive. This will vary from computer to computer. I thought I could generate something like this, but this menu just runs in a loop:

CODE
title Boot XP2
find --set-root /ntldr
map /ntldr (hd32)
map --hook
map (hd32) (hd0)
map (hd0) (hd32)
map --hook
root (hd0,0)
chainloader (hd0)+1
rootnoverify (hd0)

Is what I am trying to achieve at all possible? What can I do to fix my code above?

Many thanks,

Hernando

Hi, first of all thanks for awesome application Olof!

For security reasons I always work as non-privileged user (not even as "Power User") in Windows and using ImDisk as such user is possible only with some obstacles: I had to put driver service on automatic mode because non-privileged user cannot start services (no problem with that) and when attaching new virtual disk there is annoying message "Access is denied" but it works anyway. What annoys me the most is that it isn't possible to remove attached virtual disk later - I have to run ImDisk control panel as Administrator to do it.

Is there some way to make it work also under non-privileged user (maybe by assigning some permission I didn't discover yet)?

It will boot this modified Windows OS into the Native Command Line Interface using a modified SMSS.EXE based on the TinyKrnl project research.

Our server seems to be slightly misconfigured.
www.boot-land.net and www.winbuilder.net don't get me anywhere. Using both adresses without the www works mostly but did also hang today most of the time.
Using a fully path that leads directly to a page, without any redirecting, always works.

Hello,

I have a mp3 player, it works also as an USB key, but apparently it is seen as a big floppy (no MBR).
I tried to make it bootable by using grub4dos (grubinst_gui/grubinst) but curiously I got message "disk error"
after booting on one machine. Of course grldr and menu.lst are present on the root of the USB key/mp3 player.
Could the error be related to this machine (BIOS)? Is there any possible workaround?

Attached are the original boot sector and the one set by grub4dos.
YP-U3_bootsect.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/?z050cymumuy

I cannot transform the USB key as HDD with MBR (using ptedit32) since if I do it, the mp3 player will not function (it will automatically
reformat back the mp3 player to big floppy format), although then no problem booting the key with grub4dos.

So maybe there is a solution by using fbinst as in this topic http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=7932 ?
But fbinst will format the USB key as USB-ZIP or USB-HDD, not as USB-FDD, so I am afraid that the mp3 player function will be gone after the format.

Thank you for your inputs.

I have questions and while they sound simple, I'm sure they're probably not. The company I work for has VPN access. It's 32 bit on the server side. When ever I try to log on it tells me that it doesn't support my personal 64 bit Vista home pro machine. I've asked our tech support people who tell me that they have no plans to support the 64 bit system or any Linux system anytime soon. So I find myself looking for a work around. I've tried the various Linux operating systems which allowed me to get further into the VPN system, but not all the way. I still can't access the outlook web access email.

One of my coworkers has another unique problem with his 64 bit Vista machine. His hard drive crashed. The simple answer is just to get a new hard drive. Since we live on a Caribbean Island with no Fry's, Micro Center, Comp USA or best Buy's the only options we are left with is postal mail which is unreliable or to wait till one of us travels back to the states.

I'm curious if Vista PE can be configured to load entirely into ram as a 32 bit rescue disk when the hard drive quits working and returns an error code. Most things I've tried stop right there. I haven't tried disconnecting my working drive just to test whether or not it would continue to load and function properly if Vista PE couldn't find a drive at all. Can someone help with these questions?

Win7PE - Error Win7PE with AIK

Hi all,

who does succeed building a Win7PE Live-CD from AIK only? Is it possible?

I always get the same error:

DirCopy - Failed to copy directory [%BaseDir%\Temp\Win7PE\BootWimSrc\Windows\boot\dvd\*.*] to: [%BaseDir%\Target\Win7PE\Windows\boot\dvd] (see attached log-file)

I mounted winpe.wim with gimagex and didn`t the required directory. I only found it on the Windows 7 DVD (RC).

My System: Win XP SP3, Winbuilder 076, AIK RC (en)

Thanks,

olli3

I'm trying to compile VistaPE (on a machine running Windows 7 RC, WAIK is NOT installed), but despite the fact that I've spent six hours on this, I've yet to successfully get one finished. I'm really frustrated right now with this whole process, but I'm not quite ready to give up; I'm hoping that you guys can help me out! biggrin.gif

Here's my problem. I get the following error during the build process when WinBuilder processes 10-explorer.script:

CODE
ExtractFile - Failed to expand file: [Reboot.7z] to: [%BaseDir%\Target\VistaPE-Core\Windows\System32\Config\Systemprofile\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu]

I looked in 10-explorer.script, and I found a reference to Reboot.7z on line 31:

CODE
Unpack,Links,Reboot.7z,True,"%ProfileDir%\Microsoft\Windows","Start Menu"

Why is WinBuilder throwing an error when it gets to this file?! I don't even know where its trying to find this file, nor why it can't unpack it! I would really like to move on from Windows XP-based PE environments, but VistaPE isn't making it easy (this is only the first of many errors, and each error can take up to 20 minutes to show up thanks to WimUtil's really slow mounting process) sad.gif

Hi all,

For a few weeks I've been trying different Winbuilder Projects in the hopes of creating a boot disk that has integrated driverpacks (http://driverpacks.net/), including some 3rd party driver packs for my ExpressCards that I use with my laptop. The boot disk should also be able to backup and restore disk images. I really only want the drivers so that the backup and restore process will be faster.

So far, I've used Winbuilder 76, VistaPE 11 to create a boot disk with Acronis TI (thanks Max_Real Qnx!)

Once booted, my laptop is missing a few drivers; so, I run DriverForge5 with DriverPacks and a 3rd party driver section that includes some drivers for my laptop (onboard NIC, Intel MassStorage) and drivers for my two ExpressCards (eSata, Gigabit NIC)

After DriverForge5 runs inside the booted VistaPE, many of my drivers are installed and the eSATA expresscard is recognized.

However, when I connect an external HDD using an eSATA enclosure, the disk shows up with a question mark in the device manager:

Unknown Devices gives more information:

Details from Unknown Devices:

I've also attached the relevant sections in the registry.

Is this a problem with the eSATA expresscard drivers or is there some piece missing from VistaPE that usually recognizes these "SCSI" disks?

I started looking into integrating the drivers during the build process, but there are so many methods... what is the commonly used method these days?

Thanks in advance for any advice/help you can provide!

p.s. freeimagehosting.net isn't that cool... what do you guys use?

Hello Gents,

I made a small freeware app that allows one to clone a drive (physical or logical) to/from another drive or image.

On top of that the tool can
-save the MBR or BS,
-delete the layout of the drive,
-wipe with 0's,
-resize (be careful with that...)
-create a sparse file,
-make a vmdk from a raw image file.

Tool can be downloaded here : http://erwan.l.free.fr/clonedisk/ .

There are plenty of other (and possibly better) that can do the same.
What I was looking for was a GUI (no command line tool), merging several functionalities at once and free.

Feedback and requests welcome smile.gif

Regards,
Erwan.

From: http://www.withinwindows.com/

"Back in March, I wrote about a sick-joke of a limitation in Windows 7 Starter edition preventing users from changing the wallpaper. The limitation was imposed by the use of a technical licensing policy named ChangeDesktopBackground-Enabled and re-enforced by a SHA-256 hash of the static image, to prevent img0.jpg hot-swapping.

Given Windows 7 Starter's applicability to the rising netbook market, it was presumed that Starter would branded by OEMs and/or mobile carriers (like Verizon) like any other Windows SKU. This is no longer a valid presumption.

Here's the official scoop, from Microsoft:

In Windows Starter Edition, OEMs must not modify or replace the Windows-provided background for Windows Welcome, the logon screen, or the desktop.

Yikes.

Digging through the recent leaked builds, I have also confirmed that Microsoft has modified the SHA-256 hash, indicating a new (and now permanent) Starter wallpaper is now in place. Due to the low quality of the recent leaks, however, I can't show you what it looks like. My guess? The new humongous Windows logo wallpaper, shrunk down of course.

(Thankfully, UxStyle, to be pushed out as a public beta this weekend (hopefully), will feature the ability to bypass this wallpaper restriction.)" --quoted from above website

QUOTE
The Ramdisk driver we use for this guide is almost identical and based on the Microsoft sample driver described here: Microsoft KB 257405. The version we use in this article fixes a bug with Windows XP and NTFS partitions (described in the MS KB article) and adds the ability to change drive letter and disk size in a more user-friendly way, using the Device Manager.

We can install/configure the Ramdisk in three simple steps:

1. Download and uncompress the Ramdisk driver in an empty directory you can remember: Ramdisk Driver
2. 2. In Control Panel -> Add/Remove Hardware , select Add a new device -> select hardware from a list -> Other(All) devices -> Have Disk , then point to the folder that contains the RAMDisk.inf file you extracted in step 1. Click next/finish to complete the driver installation.
3. You can change the size / drive letter of your new Ramdisk from the Device manager: Right-click on My Computer , select Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> expand the RAM Disk -> Properties

At this point you have successfuly installed and configured a RAM Disk drive on your system. Keep in mind that the contents of the RAM disk are lost when changing its size and/or drive letter in Device Manager! They are also lost if power is lost, computer rebooted, etc. You might want to reboot and copy some files to your new RAM disk from within Windows Explorer to ensure it's operating properly.

Notes: In Windows XP, you might have to go to Control Panel -> System to access the device manager. Depending on your OS, you might be prompted to reboot after the drive is installed. Keep in mind that the size of your Ramdisk is substracted from the available RAM, so don't use any wild values. Depending on the intended use, 1 - 16 MB should be the enough, even in systems with plenty of RAM

quoted from:
http://www.ramdiskzone.com/rd/articles.php

This is likely one of the first editions from qsoft based on the microsoft one, anyone willing to upload the more recent versions with source code?

This version allows to use some predefined values up to around 60Mb.

Dear all,

I'd like to share my experience here.

I had a dasaster with my HDDs. I've bought a 500g HDD and put into PC. And installed a small XP into it. And I used PartMagic 8.05 to resize patition. I have 3 disks. Disk 0 300g IDE, Disk 1 200g SATA, Disk2 500g SATA, all are NTFS.
When I ran PartMagic,it said there is an error in Disk 0 bla bla, do you want to fix it. I didn't look the error message thoroughly and press YES.
And it said there is an error in Disk 1 bla bla, do you want to fix it. Same as above, I press YES.
Then it resezed and finally I click to APPLY it.
It said there is an error in Disk 2. Apply cancelled and finished without successful.

And I reboot my PC and that began dasaster of my days.
Boot freezed at Windows logo and dead. mellow.gif
All F8 functions same dead. huh.gif
Booted with Live USB/CD are same, dead at logo screen. mad.gif
Booted with Windows DOSs are same dead at error -13.
Booted ok with DOS 6. dry.gif
Making ram boot with DOS6 and testdisk.
Only found Disk0 IDE drive. Deepscanned and strangely found some sectors are FAT code. merc.gif
Used with HDD Regenerator 1.71, no luck.
I unplugged all Disks and replugged one by one to boot.
Founded only Disk2 is ok booting but black screen. sad.gif
Others are dead at booting time.
So reformatted Disk2 and setup OS on it.
Boot fine and everything OK. magic.gif
And I replugged Disk0 and Disk1.
Reboot failed at logo screen.
Used HDD Regenerater 1.51. Luckily, booted and recovered some bad sectors in Disk1 and unluckily, it didn't see Disk0.
Rebooted failed at logo screen. frusty.gif
Used DOS6 with RAM boot OK, scandisk failed. TestDisk DOS version worked and I deleted MBR.
Now, reboot OK. tongue.gif
All 3 disks are appeared but Disk0 is blank and fully unallocated.
Disk0 is my backup data drive now zero data on it. hyper.gif
Not panic, I'm recovering all my data about 280g.
It will take 4 hours to fully recovered.
Waiting to finish. coffee.gif
Writing this message in a few minutes but all process took me 3 days and 3 nights time.
I have to take a rest and sleep for a couple of days as of today. infomilies10.gif
You can take a lesson from my experience.

I use WinBuilder 0.76 and was trying to build VistaPE v.12 (RC1) and everything seemed to work fine until the ISO image was to be built.

This is the error message that I got (including one message before and one after):

Run - Processed section [CompatibleCD] in file: [%BaseDir%\Projects\VistaPE-Core\Finalize\01-iso-cd-usb.script]
Retrieve - Failed to retrieve the file size from: [%BaseDir%\Target\VistaPE-Core] - File does not exist:
Halt

When the script for building the ISO image started, I also saw a DOS box for a moment warning me that some non-standard ISO image would be created. But I suppose that this is normal, right?

What could be the problem and how can I fix this?

If necessary or helpful I can also post the complete log but it is very long.

P.S.: I just saw that a new version of VistaPE is out. However, I don't think this was a specific problem of VistaPE v.12 (RC1).

This thread is reserved for people reporting their success using VistaPE Script that work on Win7PE Project.

Ideally, any user who had some success with this way of creating can post here reporting what he succeeded with and how he did it.

PLEASE NO request for help here

PLEASE NO "Nice, thank you!" kind of posts.

PLEASE NO "Ha, this is not useful!" type of comments.

This thread should become simply a list of working setups, no more, no less.

What is the difference between the devio and deviotst folders in the source tree? I don't understand how to use either one. I don't understand the useage command explanation for the devio.exe. Running deviotst.exe produces no output at the command line except a new line and return to the command prompt. If there is any documentation on how to make this work then I have overlooked it.

I didn't modify the source for these, just built with WDK 6001.18002 on Windows XP x86 free build environment (target machine = host machine). (actually the devio wouldn't build an exe at all b/c of errors but I pulled devio.exe from the website)

To ask the question a different way, what do I need to do to get a simple proxy-type connection (using the -ip method) up and running? Even if it just loops back to localhost (if that can be done), for demonstration purposes. I have the latest imdisk driver installed with the helper service running on 32-bit winxp.

Thanks!

As discussed in the Is VistaPE Dead thread, I've put together a package intended for a user to download and get an updated and useful VistaPE that works "out-of-the-box", includes a wide variety of functionality, and has been updated so as to make future API updates and additions easier. Well, I've completed my first cut at it, and here it is for others to try and comment on.

Requires WinBuilder 076 or higher. Also tested with WinBuilder 077 RC1.

Here's the changelog for VistaPE RC1a:

Project files:
  • Added variables: %ProjectInfo% (=%VistaInfo%), %PECfg% (=%VPECFG%), %PECfgCD% (=%VPECFG%), %PE_CFG% (=%VPE_CFG%), %GlobalSupport%, %GlobalTemplates%, %ProjectTemplates%, %ProjectCache%, %GlobalTemp%, %ProjectTemp%, %OsType%.
  • Modified variable %TempFolder% to equal %ProjectTemp%.
  • Replaced all references to %VistaInfo%, %VPECFG%, %VPECFG%, and %VPE_CFG% with references to the new names. The old variables remain in place in case user scripts are using them.
  • Added VistaPE API commands to the Maqic Wand in WinBuilder.
  • Straightened out shell selection, wo works for all shells listed in main configuration.
  • Replaced all uses of the ReadEnv API command with "IniRead...". The command remains in place in case user scripts are using it.
  • Many fixes for spurious warnings.
  • Fixed a few spelling errors.

Application scripts:
  • Added HijackThis! 2.02 (with Runscanner 1.0.0.23).
  • Added HijackThis! Hotkey 3.0.
  • Added Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.6.2.
  • Updated Avira Antivirus (now with its internal update working at runtime!)
  • Added Sophos antivirus command-line scanner
  • Updated 7-zip to 4.65 (slight modification of saydin77's script).
  • Added Recuva 1.28.424.
  • Added MBRFix 1.09.
  • Updated HDDScan to 3.2.
  • Updated System Information Viewer to 4.00.
  • Updated System Information for Windows to build 2009-05-12 freeware multilanguage.
  • Updated Partition FInd and Mount to 2.31.
  • Added SC-Diskinfo 1.11 (disk space usage visualization).
  • Added A43 2.53 file manager.
  • Updated Cubic Explorer to 0.90.0.1131.
  • Added Super Finder XT 1.6.1.1 (with language choices ... but I don't see Turkish unless it's listed in Turkish).
  • Added Unstoppable Copier 3.56.
  • Added Y-copy 1.0d.
  • Added FileZilla 3.2.6.1.
  • Updated SumatraPDF to 0.9.3.
  • Added NirSoft's Regscanner 1.7.7.0 (Lancelot's script).
  • Added Paraglider's RegShot 1.8.2.
  • Updated MiTec WIndows Registry Recovery to 1.4.0.
  • Updated DiskCryptor to 0.7.
  • Updated TrueCrypt to 6.2a.
  • Added Paraglider's Runscanner 1.0.0.23.
  • Added NirSoft's Produkey Key Finder 1.35.
  • Updated Dependency Walker 2.2.
  • Updated System Explorer to 1.5.
  • Updated Universal Extractor to 1.6.
  • Added Unlocker 1.8.7.

Other OS:
  • Updated Memtest 86+ 2.11.
  • Updated Parted magic Linux to automatically download and use the latest version.

VistaPE Core RC1a (83 mb).

Looks like the oem3.inf that comes bundled with VMWareNIC.script is getting over written by another oem3.inf provided with MS client for networks.

The fix is to extract oem3.inf, from the script, rename it to vmxnet.inf and re-add.

Change the VMWareNIC.script line 17 from:

CODE
ExtractFile,"%ScriptFile%","Folder","oem3.inf","%TargetDir%\windows\inf"
to
CODE
ExtractFile,"%ScriptFile%","Folder","vmxnet.inf","%TargetDir%\windows\inf"

boot-land.net has exchanged it's banner logo with UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD), one of the first and most popular freeware DOS boot disk projects ever made available to the public.

This project is very interesting and is making a good effort to keep the DOS platform up to date with the current hardware demands. It's free to share and download.

Here is the project website - http://ultimatebootcd.com/ and you see the link for UBCD at our Recommended section of the site.

This is a topic meant to relate ideas posted by members.

As winbuilder is developed these items will be updated as needed by .script developers, this is also meant to be used as a "To Do" list althought some requests may take some priority over other ideas.

Thank you! smile.gif

Features added:

- Run [process] section inside script.project on startup - available on 053 beta 1
- File/DirCopy - support wildcards - topic
- In the encoded files tab, the size of the files should be in mb or kb

Features, modifications and fixes proposed:

- move/delete scripts from within Winbuilder
- re-introducing the link to the text editor (Notepad) in the source section
- define a default comenting style
- Command that extracts resource strings or images from an .exe or.dll file
- Making fonts larger or user sizeable for higher screen resolutions
-IniWritetextLine-syntax improvement
-Interface problem.

So this is the situation. My bootsequence is set so the system boots from USB first and next from HD. I've done this so if I have a USB stick / harddisk with an OS and a bootloader in the mbr inserted in my PC, it will boot from it. However if there is no OS on it, I expect the POST to ignore the stick / disk.

At this moment I have two USB memory sticks. When I leave the first one (1 GB sandisk cruzer, fat16) in while rebooting, the system boots to the OS on the HD; that is what I want. When I leave the second one (Verbatim store_n_go 4GB, fat32) in, the system attempts to boot from the usb disk which is NOT what I want.

fdisk for both disks shows that the bootable flag is not set and that each disk contains 1 partition.

I tried to fix the 4 GB by overwriting the MBR with 512 zeros. First of all this did not solve the issue and secondly ended in a little disaster as the OS (Ubuntu) did no longer pick it up automatically. Glad I made a backup of the MBR first.
Reading a bit and found that I overwrote the partition table as well so that explained that problem. A retry with only 446 zeros also did not solve it (pretty obvious I think).

Does anybody know if it's possible to prevent the POST from attempting to boot from the 4GB and if so, how. I like to understand on a low level (tell me which bit to flip or something like that; if you advise to format, please tell me why that would solve the problem etc)

Some points
  • I don't want to change the boot sequence to HD first as that will prevent an external disk from booting without additional action.
  • I'm running Ubuntu, so please don't advice on windows tools that can do the trick

I know I'm not asking much in a first post wink.gif
Thanks in advance, WimS

PS If additional data is required, please let me know. Quite new to this, so not sure what is relevant.

When I boot grdlr with chain.c32 from SYSLINUX:
CODE

TEXT HELP
This entry will bring you to the GRUB4DOS menu.
ENDTEXT
COM32 /boot/syslinux/chain.c32
APPEND ntldr=/boot/grub/grldr

It boots fine, when I run it from a USB stick (or hard drive).

When I run it from ISOLINUX, it won't find the menu.lst file. The root device is set wrong (is set to hd0,0). It will find the menu.lst file when I edit the embedded menu (removed --ignore-cd). I don't want to do this, because when grub4dos starts scanning all devices, there is no advantage at using grldr instead of grub.exe. When SYSLINUX/ISOLINUX is booted first, the root device from which grub4dos should read, is already determined, but if it needs to use the 'find --set-root' command, you don't know which menu.lst file it is going to use (not the right one).

So grub4dos should stop at the bold text of the embedded menu for my purpose.

chain.c32 does load the whole grldr file (ntldr of Windows XP doesn't do this), so you can put grldr at any directory.
It also passes the boot device in register DL.

Following yesterday forum section for NaughtyPE, it was also decided to add a few more sections to better organize the topics.

A specific section for the Win7PE projects has been made and topics from Windows 7 category moved to the respective new section.

A "Windows Centric" category was also added to the frontpage and some of the sections from Boot everywhere were moved - Windows 9x, Windows XP.

New forum sections inside this Windows Centric were added:

- Windows Vista / 2008
- Performance / Security
- Hardware compatibility / Drivers
- Windows PE
- Unattended Installs

Hope this helps both readers and active members to find a more suited location for talking.

If there are any changes missing or things that need to be corrected, please point them out.

Thank you!

A small note of attention to the Win7PE developers - congratulations, the project is really showing a good progress!

If in the download center you look at nativeEx, you'll see new entries.

nativeEx is thought to be an experimental project, rather than to be used 'productivelly'.
It offers ideas, solutions, samples etc. for other projects.

Therefore during my development work I continously implement new syntax into nativeEx_barebone (if applicable).

This of course can cause that I replace 'running code' with 'code runable in the future'.

I think that is the lesser evil than having no samples after publishing a new WB version.

And I used a post by John3Voltas to change a bit.

Now there are ????_0077_RC2 projects frozen with that latest published WB version, in this example with 077_RC2.
And there are ???? projects following the latest (usually unpublished) WB version.

Developers, beeing able to access the latest unpublished version, can use these projects.
All other users may get errors and the project is not built well for them.
For those users it is not recommended to try to 'correct' the project.
The functionality is the same the 'established' projects deliver.
Here usually is only some new syntax.

Peter

I'm not sure where I should post this, so thought I'd place it here.

A while ago I found this post here http://forum.winimage.com/viewtopic.php?t=...asc&start=0
for PXE and ghost.

I have spent a long time on and off modifying this system. The big problem I had with this system was with forwarding dhcp parameters. I have found an open source project that helps a bit with this, but once again a few things need to be changed. The system I have automates an entire system rebuild using ghost images using many small programs. I have been keeping an html how to for this system. ( it's a little cryptic with bad grammar I'm sure. The directions were to get the idea down so I had something to reference.)

Anyway...I'm not a programmer, however can find my way around things. I'm sure a lot of the little programs I'm using for this set up have an open alternative out there somewhere. So I was wondering if anyone would like to try build an open source PXE Deploy/recover/thin client system with me. I have used this system with windows 2000 and windows XP.

Anyway... if any one is interested let me know. I could upload the html files so you can get an idea of what I'm kinda doing. Its an addition to the files listed to the linked post above.

Let me know

I'm requesting that WinBuilder grab the proxy settings of IE or Firefox (browse to your firefox directory even?)

The reason is, previous versions of Winbuilder worked at my job. However the newer ones don't, I think due to how it handles the proxy. My employer uses an automatic proxy with many squid servers to reduce final external bandwidth utilization.

The proxies are transparent and use the users domain credentials for authorization...

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to boot a Hyper-V VM from an ISO and then start Vista setup.exe in WDS (Windows Deployment Server) mode - pointing it to a WDS server on my network for the install image. Any experience doing something like that? I don't want to rely on DHCP, otherwise I could use the Discover images that WDS generates itself.

Thanks!

Hi!

I read many threads in this forum with similar problems and some of the very helpful documentations, but I didn't find a solution to my problem:

I want to build a multiboot disc by chain-booting the iso-image with Grub4Dos with the following parameters:
CODE
find --set-root /sysrescd.iso
map /sysrescd.iso (0xff) || map --mem /sysrescd.iso (0xff)
map --hook
chainloader (0xff)

Booting to main menu works fine. But booting the system fails because of a missing boot medium (/dev/sr0):

How can I make this work?

P.S.: Crossposted at http://www.sysresccd.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2667

SATA SSD & DDR Memory on Single Module

hxxp://www.virtium.com/index.php/pr-ssddr
hxxp://www.virtium.com/index.php/ssddr/ssddr-flyer

QUOTE
SSDDR is the first innovative memory and SSD board design that combines Serial ATA Solid State Drive (SATA SSD) and Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Ram (DDR SDRAM) technologies in a single SODIMM socket
...
Basically, the SSDDR module and Standard DDR module are interchangeable within the same SODIMM socket.

With the SATA interface as the point-to-point architecture between onboard storage devices and the controller, this SATA storage module enables faster boot-up time, quicker access time and increased data throughput. With this SSDDR SODIMM solution, data throughput dramatically increases two to four times over other embedded SSD and interfaces such as USB (Universal Serial Bus), CF (Compact Flash with IDE interface), and SD (Secure Digital). SSDDR SODIMM is the higher performance SATA disk on module for embedded applications.

"enables faster boot-up time, "

implying bootability
at least no claim it's imposible !

I would like to open this topic trying to be of a Certein help for the people that woul like to have a working multiboot UFD/usbstick.

@Jaclaz, I have collected many of you replies and I would like you to help and collect solution ready to use for newbies, and intermediate users. At hte moment I use SeaST.exe from Symantec Recovery Support Tool that can collect MBR and PArtition table.

This is a small intro of this topic project. I know that there are many variables, Type of stick, type of Motherboard, and type of bootloader (GDLDR, NTLDR, ...) I woul like to start with those one.
Best regards and thanks for the effort!!

Whenever a new WinBuilder version is published, the prgram contains a couple of captions, labels, tooltips etc. which have to be translated into the corresponding <language>.txt files.

That sometimes is a hard job for the translators.

To make their job a bit easier, I wrote a small program 'WBLanguageCompare.exe'

  • Copy this program into your %Tools%\Languages directory where the translation files reside.
  • Make sure that there is an actual _default.txt (written whenever WinBuilder starts)
  • Start WBLanguageCompare
  • Choose the language you want to maintain
  • Click 'Generate'
This will generate a file <language>_diff.txt in the %Tools%\Languages dirctory.

It contains all the labels which are missing in your translation file.
Translate those labels from English to your language and merge them into <language>.txt

Additionally: If a label is not more used by WinBuilder, it is preceeded by ---
You safely can delete that label in your <language>.txt file.

@all translators:
Please post your actual <language>.txt files here, and I'll upload them to the winbuilder.net server for download.

Peter

BootSDI.script (former IMGinRam)
Creates BootSDI.IMA file that can be booted into Ram from CD, HDD and USB devices (sticks and flash cards). By default script creates an ISO image for burning CD but you can grab this file alone in ISO\RAM folder and use it as you want wink.gif
Note 1: if you want the build running in qEmu please uncheck any other "Create ISO" scripts inside the project.
Note 2: for using this utility FileDisk driver is required. It can be installed directly from the script interface and there is no need to reboot the computer after that.

zCopy utility Download | Beta testing and discussion
NIKZZZZ from Ru-Board created scpecial utility for this script - zCopy.exe for copying all files and folders from one pointed folder to any pointed disk drive. zCopy creates the exact mirror of "home" directory on a destination drive. Then it lists all files and start copying from the biggest with compressing and checking integrity of files.. zCopy may stuff the image even if there is nearly no place on it wink.gif This gives you ability to make the smallest image possible and you can boot using 50MB image on a computer with only 80MB of RAM! This utility will be extracted in your Tools directory. Try it also for your other usual tasks.

ImageCreator.script and ImageCreator utility (reg.exe and notepad.exe are required in system32)
The other utility created by NIKZZZZ for using especially with RAM Boot. The utility makes the image of running WB system so that any changes to the regestry will be available during next boot to the build. It creates drive image (HDD or RAM disk) from the loaded system itself using direct access to the disk. Regestry files are imaged from the working system too.
In other words - it is possible to install neary any program directly when running WB build and save the settings specified in configuration file for the next time you will run WB build again! It can save some time for writing program scripts also. Why write complex scripts with files placement and regestry settings if you can just install and configure a program and save all changes directly in the base build?

How to use ImageCreator
1. Create an image file that is a RAW full sized image of a working system (virtual image in RAM, system installed on HDD or running from CD) and it is as big as this system.
2. After creating an image choose to save it as a separate image with any extention or replace with it the original one (of course only images on writable booting devices like HDD or USB sticks can be replaced).

Configuration file parameters:
[Drive] - source and temporary drives letters
SourceDrive=x:
TempDrive=z:
[RegSave]; - writes regestry hive into a file
%WinDir%\System32\config\Software=HKLM\SOFTWARE
%WinDir%\System32\config\Default=HKU\.DEFAULT
[FileDel]; - delete a file
%WinDir%\System32\Setupreg.hiv
[RegCopy]; - copies only defined regestry key into a file. If the file doesn't exist it is created.
QUOTE
%WinDir%\System32\Setupreg.hiv:HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Hardware Profiles=HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Hardware Profiles
in one line
[Arc]; - used third party archiver
Arc=gzip.exe

Allowed pathes:
%WinDir%
%SystemRoot%
%UserProfile%
Full pathes are also allowed but the drive letter is ignored and used by default.

Note: it's recomended to save only Default and Sofware hives and only some keys in System and User.dat because if you save ALL regestry it will save your hardware configuration too and may cause BSOD during next run. But - good news! - the default Ic.ini file is about 70% enough for successful installation and configuration of your licenced software directly in running system. This configuration file is recommended for the starter:
QUOTE
[Drive]
SourceDrive=x:
TempDrive=z:
[RegSave]
%WinDir%\System32\config\Software=HKLM\SOFTWARE
%WinDir%\System32\config\Default=HKU\.DEFAULT

How you can use BootSDI.IMA file
(make sure you have a backup of this computer sensetive information just in case - you are worned! don't complain if you loose any data during tests)

Running from HDD (best way to test your WinBuilder builds on a real computer).
1. Get Grub4DOS here and extract only one file from Zip archive - grldr (this file has no extention!).
2. Open Notepad and past and copy next lines in it:
QUOTE
color white/red black/red
default 0
timeout 10

title BootSDI from HDD
find --set-root /grldr
chainloader /i386/setupldr.bin

title Load Windows
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

title Reboot computer
savedefault --wait=2
reboot
Save this file as menu.lst (note the extention!).
3. Open Notepad and past and copy next lines in it:
QUOTE
[SetupData]
BootDevice = "ramdisk(0)"
BootPath = "\I386\SYSTEM32\"
OsLoadOptions = "/noguiboot /fastdetect /minint /rdexportashd /rdpath=\i386\BootSDI.IMA"
Save this file as WINNT.SIF.
4. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. On the window menu choose Tools > Folder Options... Go to tab View and uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended) - don't worry, no harm is expected you can check it back later.
5. Go to you system drive (most ofter is drive C:) and you will see the file BOOT.INI. Open the file with Notebook and add a line at the bottom of all other lines:
QUOTE
C:\grldr="Grub4Dos"
(You may also change timeout from 30 to 5 - it means how long in seconds you will see the choice for booting.)
6. Place files grldr, menu.lst, WINNT.SIF on drive C:
7. Create a folder i386 on drive C: and place there setupldr.bin (Win2003 file), ntdetect.com and BootSDI.IMA (not ISO but IMA file!).
Now each time you boot you will see the choice:
QUOTE
Windows XP
Grub4DOS
If you choose Windows XP it's obviously loads your Windows.
If you choose Grub4DOS you will be forwarded to the next menu choice and you can choose to boot Windows, reboot or load your BootSDI.IMA file on your real computer! If the build you created is bootable in qEmu during building the image will defenitely boot smile.gif

Running from a USB stick or a flash card (your movable Windows in a pocket wink.gif
(USB stick of flash card should be bootable on your computer - miracles are not possible yet wink.gif
1. Copy file WINNT.SIF created in previous step 3 to your prepared USB stick.
2. Copy the folder i386 with all files inside created in previous step 7 to the USB stick.
3. Rename setupldr.bin (Win2003 file) to ntldr (file has no extention!) and place this file (ntldr) to USB stick.
Thats all! If your USB stick or flesh card is capable to boot at all, your motherboard supports booting from USB (make needed settings in BIOS setup) and your image is bootable it should work! smile.gif

Download: please download the latest "stable" versions from nativeEx_barebone update server. This topic will contain only beta versions.

Hallo,

Some additional informations:

When you build an existing project with WB 077 RC2 for the first time, you propably will get a couple of errors and warnings.

Errors: That is not a WB bug, that is an enhancement.
Sample (imdisk.script, written by me frusty.gif )

RegWrite - Type: [0x3] Section [HKLM\WB-Setup\ControlSet001\Control\Lsa] Key [Bounds]: 0030000000200000

If you look at the syntax description:
QUOTE
  • 0x3 - Binary data - adds data in binary format. Each byte is specified by groups of two digits splitting each value with commas

WinBuilder 076 and older here silently wrote the wrong value '00'.
Now an error is generated and gives the author the possibility to correct his / her mistake.

BTW: If you want to have a look at the old syntax description (up to 074):
You can find it here: http://winbuilder.net/help/scripts/script_syntax.old.html

Warnings: They are generated
  • when an existing registry entry is going to be changed
  • when an existing file is going to be overwritten by a file with different MD5
  • when a FileCreateBlank is going to delete an existing file
These warnings can be supressed by
  • The NOWARN parameter in the script command line (like explained in the help)
  • Suppressing warnings for the whole script: Checking the 'No Warning' in the script editor > Descriptions, just below the 'Mandatory'
This makes sence for scripts which intentionally change a lot of registry values, like 'Display Properties'
  • Suppressing warnings for the whole project: Checking the 'No Warning' of script.project
Note: A higher level NOWARN cannot be deactivated in a lower level

Debug Log:
For debug purposes a special debug log.html can be created:
In Tools > Options check 'Debug log' in the middle right.
This will:
  • Inactivate all NOWARN
  • Inactivate all System,ERROROFF
  • Inactivate an eventually set 'Halt on Error'
  • Additionally show Deletes as warnings
Syntax Warnings
There are two types of syntax warnings
  • Syntax was not valid:
There is something wrong, e.g. quotes insides quotes, but propably (not guaranteed!) the command has been processed as intended
  • Unrecognized command:
    Nothing has been done.

Peter

A new forum section has been made to host the talks about NaughtyPE from MedEvil.

As most members probably know, this project is focused on bringing solutions for those who want to enjoy multimedia on their boot disks along with some other good features.

Congratulations MedEvil.

Have fun! laugh.gif

Small remark for MedEvil and other developers interested in helping:
At the moment I've only moved the main discussion topic onto the new section but I remember that several others related to NaughtyPE are scattered around other sections - would you mind moving them to the appropriate section? Thanks.

Have someone got a working a procedure for achieving a ramdisk boot with vistape using g4d and raw disk images?

I have tried with 2 different ways; map --mem & memdisk raw.

Using the memdisk way, I have the following menu.lst;
CODE
title Boot WinPE using memdisk raw
kernel (cd)/memdisk raw
initrd (cd)/vistape.dsk

vistape.dsk is a disk image with mbr and grldr and bootmgr present in root (tried with 2 different bootsectors, but no success). Tried with and without disk signature present, still the same (since it's crucial for xp/2k3). Tried building and preparing disk image with different tools, vdk, imdisk, sdimgr/sdiloader, disklessangeltool. Error message from bootmgr says; "An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data".

Using the map --mem way, I have this menu.lst;
CODE
title map --mem vistape.dsk
map --mem (cd)/vistape.dsk (hd0)
map --hook
root (hd0,0)
chainloader (hd0,0)/bootmgr

Now, this way bootmgr is happy and read the BCD store fine, but it crashes 10 seconds later with BSOD ...7B.

The BCD store looks like this;
CODE
Windows Boot Loader
-------------------
identifier              {7619dcc9-fafe-11d9-b411-000476eba25f}
device                  boot
path                    \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
description             Windows Setup
locale                  en-US
inherit                 {6efb52bf-1766-41db-a6b3-0ee5eff72bd7}
nointegritychecks       Yes
osdevice                boot
systemroot              \windows
detecthal               Yes
winpe                   Yes
sos                     Yes
ems                     Yes

Btw, the size of vistape.dsk is 498 Mb and enough ram is allocated. Device and osdevice set as boot, should be ok, as the bootmgr execution is done inside vistape.dsk. Even tried mounting the vistape.dsk and replaced boot with partitition=mounteddriveletter:

Anyone up with ideas on this one?

Joakim

Hi,
I have successfully made a boot usb using grub4dos.
I used ubd4win's utility to build it on to a 4gb stick

I then added SOME WAREZ. worked ok.

However if i try building to a large stick eg 16gb THE WAREZ fails to work.

My guess is that it needs a fat 16 formatted stick to work. As we know fat 16 has a maximum size of 4gb

How can I get them to work on the 16gb stick

Hope I'm making sense

Here's a tutorial written by Ronald Pacchiano at smallbusinesscomputing.com
QUOTE
In the old days you could use a boot disk to access the hard drive (HD) and backup your data before performing the recovery, but with Vista's NTFS file system, this isn't an option. A variety of other techniques let you preserve your data, but they're time consuming and overly complicated. However, I found a free utility called VistaPE that can potentially make the whole process far easier.

VistaPE is a self-booting application that runs independently of your computer's operating system. This lets you boot the crashed system and gain full access to the data stored on the NTFS drives. You can copy the data to a flash drive, transfer it to a network folder or even upload it to an online backup service. You can also configure VistaPE with additional utilities like virus scanners, web browsers and even office productivity tools.

And some true statements..
QUOTE
The only drawback is that you don't download it or purchase it like a typical utility. Instead it's actually compiled using a set of scripts that run under the WinBuilder script engine. Compiling these scripts can be incredibly difficult and frustrating. In all likelihood, it will not work for you the first time out, and for some people it might not work at all. If you're easily discouraged, this isn't for you. However, if you like a geeky challenge and you follow the recommended steps, I'm confident that you'll (eventually) generate a successful build of VistaPE of your own. Just be patient and don't get discouraged.

Hi,

A partnership agreement between boot-land.net and Reimage has been made.

For those who never heard about Reimage, it's a company that provides remote computer repair services for home users and PC technicians.

People at boot-land.net are expected to already know their way around computer fixing (and eventually breaking) but their repair service is excellent for those who have to perform several customer PC repairs per day and know how many headaches this brings on daily doses.

For a monthly fee you get unlimited and automated PC repairs.

Enough said - you're welcome to visit the site and try out for free the diagnosis service.

As far as i read, it is possible to start the theming service in a PE, it just won't kick in, because it waits in vain for the signal to start doing it's job.

- Has anyone done any research into this kinda thing?
- Has anyone any information on the topic he would like to share?
- Can anyone see potential problems, if the theming would kick in right from the start, without needing to be enabled?

Hi folks,

today, I finished my WinBuilder project Alberich - a rescue system for Windows XP.

The project is localized in German language. The core system based on BartPE and XPE and doesn't depend on any language, but all applications - that's what is needed in case of desaster - are localized in German. Hopefully some german speakers are interested to see what's new ...

Nobody is perfect - I need some testers! If any of you have some minutes, thanks a lot.

How to Test USB Key/Stick/Flash Drive/UFD Bootability
(Or whatever you want to call it... Some people call them USB Keychains.)

Quick Note: UFD stands for "USB Flash Drive".

On to the tutorial ! First step would be to actually download Qemu. If you Google it you'll see this address at the very top. Click the Download link. You'll see somewhere "QEMU on Windows provides precompiled QEMU versions for Windows." which will most likely send you to: http://www.h7.dion.ne.jp/~qemu-win/

Here's a mirror to the latest version (available right now) for Windows:
qemu-0.9.1-windows.zip [12.5 MB]

It was labeled as QEMU on Windows Ver 0.9.1 (2/4/2008)

1. Extract the archive to C: (for example) and rename the folder as "qemu" or "qEmu", "QeMu", "qemU" or whatever. "Qemu" would be best.

2. You can either create a batch file by right clicking inside the "Qemu" folder, choosing New -> Text Document and changing it's extension by renaming it to "usb.bat" or "test.bat" (or whatever) and adding these two lines:

CODE
@echo off
qemu.exe -L "C:\qemu" -M pc -localtime -boot c -hda \\\\.\\physicaldrive1

For simplicity purposes I've also uploaded the batch file.

Question: What if it doesn't work and my UFD isn't recognized as "physicaldrive1" ?
Answer: That's how my PC recognizes mine. Yours may differ. You ccould get this (or a similar tool) and verify.

See ?

PS: I believe the Linux version of this tutorial isn't very difficult either. If someone could please post the batch and/or method I would very much appreciate it. Thanks.

Notwithstanding the n times in which I tried to "convince" our resident programmers that the Windows Registry is a filesystem, and that thus a filesystem driver was the "right" way to access it, nothing was done about it. happy22.gif

Now, there are sources for the driver available smile.gif:

QUOTE
Registry Filesystem
A filesystem interface to the Windows registry

The registry interface is very similar to the filesystem interface in that they are both hierarchical databases that have data-less nodes (keys/directories) and data leaves (key values/files). Unforutnately, the registry is accessed through an entirely different API than files are, which can be a pain in portable software, especially those designed to edit and transfer configuration, expecting the data to be stored in files (like it is on most other OSes).Regfs provides a filesystem interface to the registry, allowing programs that aren't aware of the registry to access it anyway.

Even though the interfaces are similar, there are differences between the registry and a standard filesystem that may not be reconcilable; Regfs is NOT designed to be a general-purpose filesystem, as there are important features that cannot be implemented and interfaces differences that may be difficult to work-around at best. (See the known issues) Instead, regfs should be used to access and store basic configuration information in a unified place for all apps-- even those that don't normally use the registry. In any case, RegFS is an interesting as a NT filesystem interface wrapper.

Would it be too much to ask any of the programmers with a DDK to compile it, in order to try it? unsure.gif

Also very worth of note:

QUOTE
SD Edit
Security Descriptor Editor

Since the first release of Windows NT, security descriptors have been used to control authorization for system resources in a unified way. Security descriptors can be applied to every file, key, process, thread, event, mutex, semaphore, desktop, job, section, Active Directory object, and many other object types that exist on a NT system.

The original security descriptor editor that shipped with NT 3.1 was barely functional. Even the new editor introduced in Windows 2000 has limitations.

SD Edit is designed to expose the full functionality of security descriptors by presenting them in a direct form and by giving you full control over the details. It presents the elements of a security descriptor in a more direct form than the shell editor, and so requires you to better understand how they work at a low level.

PC emulators - Virtualbox 3

VirtualBox 3 works in MOA 2.4.1 - I haven't tested USB yet ...

Instructions: install it in MOA or elsewhere once. Then copy or junction the complete install directory to R:\vm\virtualbox3.
It can co-exist with R:\vm\virtualbox for version #2
In regular use just run virtualbox3-lodr.exe / virtualbox3-lodr.au3
from somewhere. It will speedinstall Virtualbox3 and create a desktop-icon "virtualbox3" - when it is there - Virtualbox3 is ready to start.
bridged networking is ok - have not tested USB and virtual networks yet.

The virtualbox3-lodr.exe works for 3 beta and 3.0.0

You can even run VMplayer inside a Virtualbox-VM - make sure to enable VT-supprt for the Virtualbox-VM.
You also need VT-support for 64bit VMs

If you create VMs they will be remembered during reboots.

hello to the forum,

My primary interest is achieving the lowest possible power-consumption in Windoze systems (win2k and XP).

We live "off grid" at a remote site in the mountains, so every watt is precious...and expensive to come up with.

All PC's here are laptops...Thinkpad T60p, and my wife's T61...and an old HP6000 Omnibook running 24/7 in the corner as a 'connection server', sharing its modem to our TP's over Wifi.

Since only slowwww rural dialup is available here for internet, I always appreciate sites like this which avoid page-bloat, and load quickly. By the way, RURAL dialup means about 28-31kb/sec......NOT '56k'...
